Several meetings for McLaren and Hamilton

Several meetings for McLaren and Hamilton

23 August 2012

Lewis Hamilton has met with McLaren to discuss his future on several occasions over recent weeks, according to Martin Whitmarsh. As the media continues to speculate about the 2008 Champion, a new contract is expected to be signed over the summer.

Although the futures of both Hamilton and Michael Schumacher, with McLaren and Mercedes-Benz respectively, are set to be rectified during the current break, no Schumacher announcement is likely before October. Hamilton was also keen to resolve any queries over the four free weekends and his statement should come sooner.

“If Lewis wants to stay in the team, which he has told me he does, then he should do,” Whitmarsh, who has been Team Principal since 2009, is quoted as saying by BBC Sport. “Lewis and I have spoken two or three times at length. I think we are closer than we have ever been... our conversations have been about how we are going to beat the other teams and how we are going to try and win races.”

Hamilton joined McLaren’s race line-up for 2007, which turned out to be a highly successful campaign. This yielded a five-year deal which covered 2008 to 2012. He is expected to agree at least the next three seasons in his new arrangement.
