Jenson Button was delighted to have sealed his first McLaren pole position at Spa on Sunday. His first F1 pole since Monaco 2009 for Brawn, the result – his best at Spa since sealing third for Williams in 2000 - also marks his first front row start since Malaysia back in March.
“This feels as close to winning a Grand Prix as it has for a long time,” Button said in the press conference. “A win tomorrow is now really important for the championship.”
Although many have ruled the 2009 World Champion out of the title fight for this year, the Frome man is not giving in with nine of the 20 races still to go.
“This is pretty emotional, my first pole since Monaco 2009,” he continued. “We just got the balance right this morning (following rear wing repairs). “I am (88) points behind Fernando (Alonso), so the title is a long shot but I won’t be giving up.”
The highest-placed current title contender is Kimi Räikkönen, who starts fourth for Lotus, with Alonso sixth. Lewis Hamilton is seventh, with Red Bull only tenth and 12th.
