Jenson Button was overjoyed to have returned to winning ways at Spa, marking his first victory since the season-opening Australian Grand Prix. The Englishman’s 14th career win means that McLaren is the first team to celebrate four wins and two consecutively in 2012. He now aims to maintain his run of momentum in Italy next weekend.
“I still can’t get used to talking on the podium, it’s quite strange isn’t it!” Button told rostrum interviewer and multiple Le Mans 24 Hours winner Jacky Ickx.
“To get a victory here from lights to flag is very special. It’s not been the easiest year for me, so this is a very special weekend. I’d like to thank everybody, the whole team and also you guys (the fans), for being so supportive. I’m going to enjoy this before we head to Monza, where we will hopefully do the same. Thank you very much.”
With eight races to go, Button has risen to sixth in the Drivers’ Championship and is now 63 points behind Fernando Alonso who failed to score today.
