Vettel pleased to survive ‘crazy race’

2012 Belgian Formula 1 Grand Prix: Sunday race results

Two years ago at Spa, Sebastian Vettel caused the drama as he went out of control and harpooned Jenson Button’s McLaren at the chicane. In 2012, the now reigning Champion intelligently avoided several dramas to rise from tenth on the grid to second on the podium, slicing Fernando Alonso’s championship-leading advantage to 24 points.

“Obviously it was a crazy race from where I started,” said the Red Bull driver, who had managed to avoid the multiple collision at La Source. “The start was not so good after the first corner, which was pretty crazy which lots of cars going off.

“I think it was the right call with the (one-stop) strategy - we were able to pick up some pace. After a poor start to the weekend, with the rain on Friday, it was good to come back and a fantastic race. It was fun to race a lot of people, like Michael (Schumacher), and I’m already looking forward to coming back to this unbelievable circuit next year.”

Vettel has now jumped team-mate Mark Webber for second position in the standings.
