Schumacher enjoyed 300th race despite problem

2012 Belgian Formula 1 Grand Prix: Sunday race results

Michael Schumacher had an enjoyable outing in his 300th Formula 1 race, finishing an ironic seventh at Spa, where he picked up his record-beating final title in 2004. The Mercedes driver ran as high as second but was restricted by degrading tyres and a gearbox problem.

“I quite enjoyed my 300th race and it was good fun out there with all the battles,” said Schumacher, who remains under investigation for his pit lane entry in front of Sebastian Vettel. “In the end, you have to be realistic, and getting into the points from where I started (13th) is not too bad, even if you obviously hope for more when I was second at one stage.

“Then again, it was more than we had expected. It looked pretty reasonable at the start and we were following our one-stop strategy. In the end though it did not quite work out so we decided to go for fresh tyres and attack with them; if we had not done that, I might have ended up further back. But then I lost sixth gear and there was no way to attack. We will now have to do that next week in Monza.”

Mercedes remains fifth in the championship as both Saubers – which could have demoted the silver arrows, from second and fourth on the grid – were damaged.
