2012 Belgian Formula 1 Grand Prix: Sunday race results

Many were saddened and disappointed by the first-corner collision at Spa, but not Toro Rosso. Helped by the chaos of La Source, started by Romain Grosjean, Jean-Éric Vergne and Daniel Ricciardo escaped the chaos to finish in eighth and ninth positions.

The result marks a points haul of six for the team originally known as Minardi, which has been suffered its worst Formula 1 season since its very first in 2006.

“I am really happy after what was a fantastic race,” said Frenchman Vergne, equalling his best F1 result of Malaysia at the track on which he won all three British Formula 3 races in his title season of 2010. “I had hoped to come here and score points on my favourite track and I managed it. I had a very good car and I was able to do some good overtaking moves.”

Ricciardo, who matches his own best result of Australia, was also beaming:

“That was good fun! We managed to benefit from the incident immediately after the start, when I had got a good run off the line. Then I managed to move right to the inside going through the hairpin and came out sixth. My first stint was on the Medium tyre and I think I ran as high as fourth at one point. However, I was not quite as quick in my last two stints which were on the Prime, so I dropped a couple of positions.”

The team now heads to Monza, where it won with Sebastian Vettel in 2008.
