A loose left-front wheel, and not driver error, caused Narain Karthikeyan’s retirement from the Belgian Grand Prix on Sunday. The Indian driver, who had been running in the midfield after the first-corner crash, spun off at high-speed into Stavelot.
“I got off to a very good start and the car was fantastic throughout the first stint, enabling me to keep up a good battle with Pic,” the Indian recalled.
“But after the second pit-stop I had some issues with the suspension and spun off-track. It’s a shame because I was having a good race ahead of a Caterham, but I’m happy with our performance and I hope to continue with this level at Monza next weekend.”
Caterham has confirmed to GPUpdate.net that the incident was not brought on by a touch in the pit lane with Heikki Kovalainen, who was released into his path. As a result of their actions, Caterham was fined 10,000 euros (£8,000) by the FIA.
