Sunday at Spa was a bruising time for Caterham. After Heikki Kovalainen ran as high as tenth following the first-corner melee, the Finn endured two spins and then was released into the path of Narain Karthikeyan’s HRT in the pit lane. This blunder left the team with a fine of 10,000 euros (£8,000), leaving it to ponder what might have been.
“Both drivers did well to pick their way through the damaged cars after the first corner accident,” Technical Director Mark Smith begins. “We had issues at both Vitaly (Petrov) and Heikki's first stops but both cars had clean second stops and the pit crew did well to put the problems behind them and make sure we did not repeat the issues.
“Vitaly's final place of 14th was as much as we could have hoped for today, as we have not had the pace at Spa to challenge the cars ahead, but we know what we have to do to improve. Now we have the next race in Monza to work hard to put us some way towards where we should be at this stage of the season.”
The green and yellow duo ended the afternoon in 14th and 17th positions.
