Jacques Villeneuve, F1 World Champion of 1997, has signed up for the City Challenge GT Race in Azerbaijan. The event will be staged in early October, on the weekend of the Japanese Grand Prix, and Villeneuve will drive alongside Jos Verstappen.
For what will be a racing return for Dutchman Verstappen, he and Villeneuve will compete in a Porsche 911 GT3 R. The event, taking place on a street circuit in the country’s capital city Baku, will comprise of two 30-minute qualification sprint races before a main one-hour race.
“GT racing will be an entirely new experience for me and one that I am really looking forward to,” says French-Canadian Villeneuve, who was present for his home F1 race in Montreal earlier this season. “Racing on a street circuit is always something special. I have never been to Baku or Azerbaijan before, so that is something new too.
“I've known Jos from racing together in Formula 1. He hasn’t been racing much for the last couple of years, but I am sure he will be just as determined as I am to go out, do well and have a great time in Baku. And we have the same initials, which might be a good omen…”
Villeneuve last raced in F1 for BMW in 2006. He joined Stefan GP ahead of 2010, but the Serbian outfit – which was to run old Toyota chassis – failed to make the grid.
