Fernando Alonso has explained that he received a text message apology from Romain Grosjean after the first-corner crash at the Belgian Grand Prix. The pair maintain a close friendship, having been team-mates at Renault for seven races in 2009.

Grosjean triggered a pile-up by squeezing Lewis Hamilton onto the grass. Out of control, the McLaren driver slammed into Alonso’s Ferrari when the pack arrived at La Source.

“I have a very good relationship with Grosjean, we were team-mates at Renault, and after the accident he sent me an SMS,” Alonso is quoted as saying by Autosport. “He didn't calculate the distance and the problems - it was many factors together and he felt so sorry for the accident.

"I answered 'no problem.' We will see each other again in Singapore, it was all fine.”

Alonso stresses that his engine sustained no significant damage. Each driver is permitted eight units for a Formula 1 season. Using a ninth would incur a penalty.
