Word is strengthening that Lewis Hamilton could be moving to the Mercedes works team for the 2013 Formula 1 season, ending what would be a six-year stint with McLaren. The possibility is now being suggested by several sources inside the sport, but his management insists that the story is 'untrue'.
With Hamilton’s current five-year McLaren deal ending this year, The Daily Mail is reporting that the Stevenage driver has been offered 60 million pounds by Mercedes for the next three seasons. As Nico Rosberg is already confirmed, this would see Michael Schumacher – who has the luxury of choosing whether he wishes to stay – retiring.
The theory has been backed up by another newspaper, The Guardian. Eddie Jordan, team order turned BBC F1 pundit, also reckons a move is coming.
“I believe Hamilton and Mercedes have already agreed personal terms and a deal could be imminent,” the Irishman says on the BBC Sport website.
In the current title race, Hamilton has dropped back to fifth after failing to score in Belgium. With eight races to go, he sits 47 points behind leader Fernando Alonso.
