Lewis Hamilton claims he is yet to be confirm with which team he will race next year. As F1 arrives at Monza for the Italian Grand Prix, the paddock is rife with speculation that the 2008 World Champion could be leaving McLaren for the Mercedes works team.
Gossip has dramatically increased since team owner turned BBC pundit Eddie Jordan hinted that Hamilton has agreed terms with Mercedes-Benz, meaning he would join long-term friend Nico Rosberg and replace Michael Schumacher who would then retire.
Naturally, the story dominated Thursday’s FIA press conference.
“No,” Hamilton replied when asked if a deal was in place with any team for 2013; this prompted further questions. “I want to win and you always want to win, every year – that’s why us drivers and teams even exist, so it’s just about being in the right place.”
Hamilton preferred to talk about the rest of the current campaign, but added that he is under no great pressure to confirm his situation for next year.
“I don’t have any deadlines but I’d obviously like to get it done by next season. I’m in a great position….I drive for McLaren, we’ve won the last two races and hopefully we’ll have another great weekend here. We just need to focus on preparing for that.”
Before last Sunday’s race in Belgium, Hamilton caused a storm by posting important car telemetry data on Twitter, comparing his fastest qualifying lap with that of team-mate Jenson Button. McLaren duly asked their driver to remove the image.
