Di Resta demoted but no penalty for Alonso

2012 Italian Formula 1 Grand Prix: Saturday

Paul di Resta has been given a five-place grid drop ahead of Sunday’s Italian Grand Prix at Monza, meaning he will be demoted from wherever he qualifies later today. There is no such result for Fernando Alonso, whose gearbox broke in second practice.

The Scottish driver, who has Italian ancestors, completed Friday practice without troubles but the gearbox was changed by mechanics ahead of Saturday's session.

With Alonso having already suffered engine and brake issues, the Tifosi was worried about a grid drop when he had to pull in from the second session because of a broken gearbox.

“As far as the gearbox and engine are concerned, they were units we were not planning to use in the race, so we will not incur any penalties tomorrow,” confirmed Ferrari Technical Director Pat Fry.
