Nico Hülkenberg was the first eliminee from qualifying at Monza, stopping at the Rettifilo with a fuel line problem just minutes into Q1. This is another blow for Force India, with Paul di Resta having already been handed a five-place penalty. The German believed Italy could have delivered his best grid position of the season so far.
“We just lost drive, basically,” said Hülkenberg, knocked out in Q1 for the first time in his Formula 1 career. “No more power, no more gear selection. The car basically switched off and end of story.
“This could have been one of our strongest qualifying performances this season, so to end it that way is frustrating. But, with the good pace, we can maybe still achieve something tomorrow.”
At Spa in Belgium last Sunday, Hülkenberg finished fourth and moved ahead of di Resta in the Drivers’ Championship for the first time this season.
