Italy has seen Paul di Resta claim his best ever Formula 1 qualifying result, with the Force India driver having managed fourth at Monza behind the dominant McLarens and Felipe Massa’s Ferrari. Although the Scottish driver now falls back to ninth because of a five-place gearbox penalty, he remains optimistic of a strong result on Sunday.
“We’ll take it day-by-day,” he said after the session. “We trust our instinct on the simulator. Missing FP1 was obviously not ideal but we showed this morning that we can even run in the top three.
"To just miss out on the top three in Q3 is a job well done by the team, because we’ve come here with a different philosophy and delivered.
“It’s the first gearbox penalty I’ve taken in F1 – the rules are the rules so you just have to take them on the chin and accept them.”
Team-mate Nico Hülkenberg was highly disappointed to have been left at the back of the grid, having had to stop on-track because of a fuel line problem in Q1.
