Michael Schumacher has admitted that he had set his sights on a podium finish in the Italian Grand Prix, for which he started fourth on the grid. Mercedes eventually finished sixth and seventh, leapfrogged by Sergio Pérez and Kimi Räikkönen but taking advantage of retirements for Jenson Button and Sebastian Vettel.
“It was a fun race today,” said Schumacher, five times a winner at the legendary circuit who had set the pace in opening practice. “Although I must admit that, following our performance on Friday, I had secretly hoped we would be able to move up the field…but we had a tricky first stint. After that, everything went really well; we were on the pace and I think we showed a clear upwards trend today.
“I kind of ran out of laps and, if the race had been a bit longer, I'd have been able to battle even further forward. Overall, though, we got everything out of it today. Now we need to keep this trend going and everybody in the team is working hard on it.”
As Felipe Massa finished fourth, Schumacher slips back to 11th in the championship.
