No team orders, McLaren repeats

11 September 2012

McLaren have reiterated that they will not be applying any form of team orders as long as Jenson Button still has a chance of winning the world title this year. Following the Italian Grand Prix, Lewis Hamilton sits second overall and 37 points behind championship leader Fernando Alonso, with Button sixth and 78 points in arrears.

Despite Hamilton winning at Monza with Button retiring because of a fuel system problem, McLaren stress that team orders are not yet necessary with 175 points still up for grabs.

“At the moment, the dynamics are right within the team and it will be some time before we change our approach,” Team Principal Martin Whitmarsh is quoted as saying by BBC Sport.

When Button was quizzed over the suggestion, his response was clear.

“I'm out to race,” said the 2009 World Champion. “I think Lewis doesn't need my help. Lewis is doing a great job as it is. As always, I go out to win. I'm not going to go out and pedal round and sit behind my team-mate.”

In the Constructors’ Championship, McLaren sits second and now just 29 points behind Red Bull. The Woking team is yet to pick up that particular crown since 1998.
