Michael Schumacher has sent out a heartfelt message for long-time FIA head doctor Sid Watkins, who died on Wednesday night at the end of 84. It was the Englishman who assisted the German when the latter broke his leg after crashing at Silverstone in 1999.
“A great loss for Formula 1,” Schumacher writes on his website. “Sid combined expertise with his heart and he was always there for the drivers.
“Of course, I remember Silverstone, when he was instantly at my side. I also remember our time together in the many FIA safety meetings over the years, in which he was always so keen to improve our security.
"My thoughts are with his family.”
Watkins’ sudden death has been met by thousands of tributes from motorsport competitors, team owners, journalists and fans.
