Radio DJ Chris Evans buys Dunlop Bridge

17 September 2012

BBC Radio 2 DJ Chris Evans has bought Donington Park's iconic Dunlop Bridge during a charity auction. The structure, which sold for around £300, was famously placed along the Starkeys straight by the tyre manufacturer in 1977 and has been out of use ever since the venue went under a failed revamp three years ago.

"It has just been lying there in twenty pieces in a yard, which needs tidying up - so somebody had the idea of auctioning it off," Christopher Tate, Managing Director of Donington Park, explained of the decision to part ways with the bridge. "Every now and then you've got to make some changes and we've got to tidy up the yard."

The bridge was one of a wide range of items included in the Bonhams auction, with a model of Project Blue Star (World Land Speed Record car) and the circuit's Pirelli clock also going under the hammer. All of the money raised will be donated to the Hope Against Cancer charity, based in Leicestershire and Rutland.
