McLaren ‘assumption’ that Hamilton will stay

20 September 2012

McLaren have always expected Lewis Hamilton to stay with the team for the 2013 Formula 1 season and beyond. That is the viewpoint of Technical Director Paddy Lowe, with the Monza paddock having been filled by speculation that the 2008 Champion could move to Mercedes.

The Hamilton-to-Mercedes rumours strengthened when Eddie Jordan, F1 team owner turned BBC pundit, stated that Hamilton had already agreed a preliminary deal with Mercedes.

“That's how we're working in terms of the design for next year,” Lowe is quoted as telling BBC Sport, when asked if Hamilton will remain alongside Jenson Button.  “It is our assumption that they are the drivers who we will be fielding next year. We have two fantastic drivers in Lewis and Jenson and we are very keen to keep them.”

Last time out at the Italian Grand Prix, Hamilton became only the second driver this year – after former team-mate Fernando Alonso – to clinch a third race victory.
