Fernando Alonso believes his best shot at this year’s world title may be to win the next trio of events in Singapore, Japan and Korea. With seven ‘flyaway’ races to go, the Spaniard leads Britain’s Lewis Hamilton by the margin of 37 points.
Alonso has won two of the four Singapore night races so far, having clinched a controversial victory when Renault fixed the 2008 event before winning cleanly for Ferrari two years later.
“We should have the possibility to attack over the (next) two or three Grands Prix,” Alonso said in Marina Bay on Thursday. “Here, Japan and Korea: over those races our aim is to win and increase our lead. We must maximise those 75 possible points.”
Adding pole should be possible under lights in Singapore, Alonso continued:
“We were competitive on the street circuits in Monaco and Canada, so we will just try our best again here because we know how important pole position is. It’s true that McLaren is in very good form and they have become the favourites after the last few races, but I’m under no pressure at all…it’s tight, but I’m the only one who can afford a mistake or retirement.”
Alonso is one of only two drivers to have won three Grands Prix this year, with the other – Hamilton – having equalled that tally last time out at Monza.
