Lewis Hamilton’s Singapore pole position is his second in Marina Bay and 24th of his F1 career, equalling triple World Champions Niki Lauda and Nélson Piquet. After the session, he admitted his confusion over Sebastian Vettel’s apparent lack of pace after the Red Bull driver could manage only third despite topping all three practice sessions.

Having clearly run a heavier fuel load in Friday practice, Hamilton stormed to his fifth pole of the year and third of the last four races.

“The guys have done a fantastic job all week to come here with some small things we have improved since the last race,” said the McLaren driver. “We weren’t sure how we would turn out against the others, with the high downforce here, but I was very, very happy that I was able to pull that time out. I’m not sure what happened to Sebastian at the end, after he had been fastest in all practice sessions.”

With title rival Fernando Alonso fifth, Hamilton will share the front row of the grid with Pastor Maldonado, with whom he crashed in the closing stages of the European race.
