Mercedes will start ninth and tenth for the Singapore Grand Prix. In Q3, Michael Schumacher and Nico Rosberg each completed just a single tour. For Marina Bay, the Brackley-based team is running new-look exhausts for the first time; these were introduced by Sam Bird and Brendon Hartley in last week’s Magny-Cours test.
“I am reasonably pleased with our qualifying, considering what we have seen this weekend,” Schumacher began. “We could have tried to make up one or two positions, although this would have been difficult; we decided to give up that possibility in favour of the fact that we now have a fresh set and free choice of tyres going into the race.”
Rosberg added that the updates simply need ‘more time’ to work properly.
“Our new updates are working reasonably well this weekend, although it will definitely take some more time to optimise the package,” he explained. “After not taking part in Q3, we will have more opportunities for the race tomorrow and we can decide whether we want to start on the Soft or Super Soft tyre. It should be an interesting race, so let's see what we can do.”
Schumacher is yet to score a World Championship point in Singapore, whereas Rosberg enjoyed his best nighttime result of second place for Williams in 2008.
