Fernando Alonso highlighted just why he was so pleased with another podium finish in Singapore: his nearest championship challenger again failed to finish. As Sebastian Vettel moved up to second overall, Lewis Hamilton retired with a gearbox failure.
Sunday night had been an ideal opportunity for McLaren and Hamilton, who led from pole position until the failure ended proceedings early on Lap 23. As Vettel took his second win of the year, Alonso picked up another 15 points for third place behind Jenson Button.
“Of course it’s one of the best tracks to drive, so we enjoy driving here,” Alonso said on the podium. “The atmosphere is fantastic and it was a fun race again.
“Well, at Monza it was Lewis winning the race and Sebastian retiring…here it is Sebastian winning and Lewis retiring, so for me it is okay if they keep doing it like that!”
With six races to go, Alonso holds a 29-point advantage over Vettel.
