Button: Title fight between Alonso and Vettel
24 September 2012 – Jenson Button has pinpointed Fernando Alonso and Sebastian Vettel as the title contenders for 2012, despite McLaren having again had the fastest car in Singapore. After Lewis Hamilton retired from the lead, he plummeted from second to fourth in the championship and now trails the leading Spaniard by 52 points.
Button’s own race ended in second position behind Vettel, just as it had last year, but the 2009 World Champion is 75 points off the lead with a maximum 150 left on offer.
“It's hard for anyone (to catch Alonso) except Seb at the moment,” Button is quoted as saying by BBC Sport. “It's between those two but there's still a lot of people with a long shot. That's what we're all going to go for.
“It just shows that one bad race makes a massive difference; Fernando had his at Spa, Lewis had his at Spa and here, Seb had his at the last race. I had mine in the last race. When no-one has the consistency, you can't close a big gap on someone. But Seb is now only 29 points behind - that's a gap that's shrinking.”
The last time both McLarens finished one race was at the Hungarian Grand Prix on 29 July, when Hamilton took victory and Button crossed the line in sixth position.
