Maybe Pérez signing has helped, Massa admits

2012 Japanese Formula 1 Grand Prix: Friday

Felipe Massa admits that Sergio Pérez moving to McLaren might be a large contributing factor when it comes to keeping his own Ferrari seat in 2013. Until recently, the Mexican had been viewed by most as the Brazilian’s most likely replacement for next season.

The Pérez-to-Ferrari rumours began to die down when Ferrari President Luca di Montezemolo started hinting that the Sauber driver was not experienced enough. In a coup, McLaren has now signed him alongside 2009 World Champion Jenson Button.

“Well, I think maybe,” Massa said when asked if his own chances of staying alongside Fernando Alonso have now increased. “I don’t know. As I said, I’m pretty confident things are going in the right direction.

“Also, I think Sergio is doing a good job this year and he showed his performance and I’m happy that he can sign for a big team as well. But, anyway, I need to concentrate on doing the best and that’s the way it is.”

Massa is currently in his seventh F1 campaign with Ferrari. He won his last race to date at the end of 2008 and is yet to finish on the podium since the 2010 season.
