Telmex stays with Sauber despite Pérez exit

2012 Japanese Formula 1 Grand Prix: Friday

Sauber has renewed its sponsorship deal with Mexican telecommunications giant Telmex, despite the driver heading off to McLaren for the 2013 F1 season.

The re-signing of Telmex is a much-publicised coup for Sauber, which had been expected to lose the heavy back from Carlos Slim’s group. This suggests that current reserve driver Esteban Gutiérrez, also a Mexican, is favourite for a race seat.

“We were informed by Telmex about this change and Telmex also told us that they have a long-term project with Sauber which will not be affected by Sergio leaving the team,” explains team CEO Monisha Kaltenborn. “They have an overall vision regarding motorsports, which is not only their racing school (Escudería Telmex). They want to establish motorsport more in that part of the world.”

Sauber is yet to confirm either of its race drivers for 2013. Another name closely connected with the Swiss squad is former Toro Rosso man Jaime Alguersuari.
