Fernando Alonso’s title chances suffered a major blow at Suzuka, as the Spaniard retired on the first lap while Sebastian Vettel sealed a second consecutive victory. The Ferrari spun at Turn 2, having picked up a left-rear puncture following contact with the Lotus of Kimi Räikkönen.
“Well, I had no space on the right,” Alonso recalled. “I had Button on the right, I had Kimi on the left. I don’t understand why Kimi didn’t lift off. There wasn’t any room and I don’t know what he was trying to do at the first corner.”
When asked how this will affect his championship, Alonso responded:
“Nothing really. This is motorsport. I think one time I might retire, one day Vettel maybe will retire. Now we have a mini championship, let’s say.”
With five races to go, Alonso leads Vettel by just four points.
