It was a reassured Pastor Maldonado that took the chequered flag in eighth position at Suzuka on Sunday. The collection of four points finally confirmed that the Venezuelan was back into the top ten for the first time since winning in Barcelona.
“It was a good race for me,” the Williams driver reported. “The car had great pace and was very consistent but it proved difficult to overtake, especially towards the end.
“We felt we were quicker than the cars in front, but the nature of the track makes it difficult to close the gap. We’re back in the points, so I’m happy with that as it gives us great confidence going into the next race.”
Team-mate Bruno Senna came home 14th, having taken a drive-through penalty for hitting the rear of Nico Rosberg at the second corner of the opening lap.
