We did the best we could, says Räikkönen
13 October 2012 – Kimi Räikkönen claims that Lotus could not have performed any better than it did for fifth on the grid at the Korean Grand Prix. The Finn remains third in the Drivers’ Championship, which is now heading into its final quarter of the season.
From Korea onwards, the cars of Räikkönen and Romain Grosjean are running coandă-style exhausts which take advantage of airflow’s tendency to find the nearest surface. As the hot gases exit upwards, they then head towards the diffuser.
“Qualifying was okay and I think we did the best we could have done,” Räikkönen said after the session, having missed Q3 only four times so far this year. “We tried some different things on the car over the weekend and qualified in a reasonably good position, but of course you always want to go faster.
“The new exhaust system feels good; you do lose a little horsepower from it, but it’s better on the aero side and you can’t get something for nothing. The gap to the cars at the front is not too much, so we’ll try to do what we can tomorrow.”
Räikkönen’s best lap of 1:37.625 missed pole position by four tenths of a second.
