Sauber has announced that Dutchman Robin Frijns will be joining Mexican reserve driver Esteban Gutiérrez for next month’s Young Driver test in Abu Dhabi. The latter is battling for the Formula Renault 3.5 title heading into this weekend’s finale at Barcelona.
Gutiérrez has been Sauber reserve since becoming the first GP3 Champion in 2010, whereas Frijns is involved in a titanic scrap for the World Series by Renault crowd with Force India reserve Jules Bianchi; the Frenchman leads by five points with two races to go. In 2011, Frijns was Champion in the lower Formula Renault 2.0 Eurocup category.
Both men are aged 21. The Yas Marina gathering will take place between Tuesday 6 and Thursday 8 November, with Frijns driving on Tuesday and Gutiérrez the remaining two days.
