Robin Frijns successfully collected a second Formula 1 test by winning the Formula Renault 3.5 title in Barcelona on Sunday. The Dutchman will now be testing with Red Bull, as well as with Sauber, in next month’s Young Driver outing of Abu Dhabi.
Frijns had led the championship standings heading into the final meeting of the year in Barcelona, but still needed to fend off challenges from Jules Bianchi of France and Britain’s Sam Bird, respective F1 reserve drivers for Force India and Mercedes.
The title was all but sewn up midway through the second race when, having exited the pit lane absolutely together, Frijns and Bianchi came to blows at Turn 4. The latter ended up in the gravel trap whereas the former went on to finish in seventh position; he was later penalised and dropped to 14th, but keeps the title.
Both races were won convincingly by Portugal’s António Félix da Costa, who ended his Sunday with a demonstration run in the 2010 Red Bull Formula 1 car.
