Sergio Pérez has claimed a highly commendable eighth place on the Indian Grand Prix grid, whereas Sauber team-mate Kamui Kobayashi could manage no more than 17th. The Mexican’s achievement is underlined by the fact that he missed the whole of Friday’s opening practice session after being taken ill.
“Today’s result is a nice surprise and it was hard work to get there,” McLaren-bound Pérez admits. “I am personally very happy with P8 and I am really pleased for the team.
“It was a great effort from the guys to improve the car after Friday, when we were struggling so much. In Q2 I think I managed to get a perfect lap. The one in Q3 wasn’t that good, but still okay. I am very motivated for tomorrow’s race and want to score as many points as possible.”
So far this season, Pérez has picked up three podium finishes in the Grand Prix of Malaysia, Canada and Italy.
