Revealed in the form of a video on Monday, Lotus has confirmed that Kimi Räikkönen will be staying with the team for the 2013 Formula 1 season. Despite not winning a race yet, the Finn sits third overall in his comeback campaign.
World Champion of 2007 with Ferrari, Räikkönen had made his F1 debut with Sauber in 2001 with only 23 car races behind him. He was championship runner-up to Michael Schumacher and Fernando Alonso in 2003 and 2005, respectively, then driving for McLaren. He was with Ferrari until the end of the 2009 campaign.
Mathematically, the Espoo man is one of only five men who can still pick up the 2012 drivers’ title with three races still to go.
His position of third overall has been achieved through great consistency, having finished every racing lap of the year and scored points in all races bar China. To date, he has achieved ten top five finishes, 13 Q3 qualifying performances and finished on the podium six times.
Räikkönen’s 2013 team-mate is yet to be officially verified, but he is expected to remain alongside France's Romain Grosjean.
