Nico Hülkenberg has signed a deal with Sauber for the 2013 Formula 1 season. The move, confirmed by the Swiss team on Wendesday morning, leaves a seat open at Force India alongside Paul di Resta who is expected to be retained.
Hülkenberg's anticipated switch has been agreed on the back of an impressive return to the sport. The German, who made his debut with Williams in 2010 before being dropped in favour of Pastor Maldonado, was given a lifeline in the form of a reserve role at Force India for 2011. He made his racing comeback with the team this year and has so far secured nine top ten results, including a fourth place finish in Belgium.
"I’m really looking forward to working with the Sauber F1 Team," he said. "It’s well-placed and very competitive. Plus it’s a team in which young drivers have repeatedly delivered exceptional performances. I would like to take up that baton.
"The Sauber F1 Team is currently going through a very positive development and I’m certain that together we can achieve a lot. Until that time I will remain fully focused on my job with the Sahara Force India Team. I’d like to thank the management at Sahara Force India for giving me the chance to return to Formula 1 as a team driver."
Sauber is yet to confirm the name of its second driver for the 2013 campaign, but Telmex-backed Esteban Gutiérrez has been tipped as the most likely candidate.
