Alonso hoping Red Bull suffer technical problems

2012 Abu Dhabi Formula 1 Grand Prix

Fernando Alonso would be more than happy to see Red Bull encounter more technical problems, which could swing the championship back into his favour. So far this season, Sebastian Vettel has suffered a broken alternator on two occasions.

The first of Vettel’s issues was particularly costly, as the German had been dominating the European Grand Prix in Valencia which Alonso went on to win in dramatic style.

“Failures are always in the air,” Alonso said in Abu Dhabi on Thursday. “It’s possible for all of us. We just need to concentrate on our own car and make sure we have strong finishes with no technical problems; because, if we do have problems, it will make it very difficult.”

The Spaniard went on to stress that staying in touch with Red Bull is now critical.

“If Vettel’s KERS fails, nobody knows anyway because he might be ten seconds ahead…so we just can’t have that – we need to be right there. We’ve got some new parts coming, so we’ll have to see how we get on; but we won’t just close the gap here in Abu Dhabi, so we’ll probably be on the same performance as in India.”

In Greater Noida last weekend, Alonso started fifth on the grid. In the race, he overtook both McLarens as well as KERS-stripped Mark Webber to finish second to Vettel.
