2012 Abu Dhabi Formula 1 Grand Prix: Saturday qualifying results

Abu Dhabi’s pole position for McLaren and Lewis Hamilton is the first time Red Bull have not been at the front in qualifying since Singapore four races ago. Clinching his 25th pole in F1, the 2008 Champion aims to go out on a high before joining Mercedes.

“I’m very excited as it’s the first time in a long time that we’ve been ahead of Red Bull,” he said. “As always, I know it’s going to be very tough and I just hope we’re strong enough to right. The team has been fantastic all weekend and the car works well here, I don’t know why. The track suits me and it also seems okay on the long runs.”

Team-mate Jenson Button could not muster as much from his car, ending the day six tenths of a second slower than Hamilton and five positions further back on the grid.
