António Félix da Costa was the man behind the wheel of the Red Bull F1 car as Abu Dhabi Young Driver testing began on Tuesday. Fresh from his double win in the Formula Renault 3.5 finale, the Portuguese was mightily impressed with the package.
“This was my first time driving an RB8 at a proper test, with proper tyres on a real circuit, and… wow!” he laughed. “I was perhaps a little anxious beforehand, but ultimately the pedals and the steering wheel are in the usual places.
“There’s a lot to learn, particularly with the buttons on the wheel, and it took one or two runs to get completely comfortable with all of that – but I think we had a good day.”
The 21-year-old, who today ran with aerodynamic sensors all over the RB8, will enjoy a second full day in the cockpit on Wednesday.
