Valsecchi: I’m ready for Formula 1

9 November 2012

Davide Valsecchi is sure that he can follow in the footsteps of Nico Rosberg, Lewis Hamilton, Nico Hülkenberg and Pastor Maldonado by making an F1 debut the year after becoming GP2 Champion. The Italian tested with Lotus in Abu Dhabi this week.

“More or less everyone before me got to Formula 1,” he told ESPN of the GP2 Champions, with Timo Glock and Romain Grosjean having already entered F1 before returning to the feeder series. “Maybe only Pantano missed it, but with him there is the story that he'd been in F1 before and maybe was a bit too old.

“The other GP2 Champions all got to Formula 1, so I really hope to follow the story because I think that I'm ready now to use the chance I will have to the maximum. Formula 1 is more complicated now…but we have to remember that, at the end of the day, it's the same sport: getting the maximum out of the car you have.

“Formula 1 is a bit faster but, okay, I won GP2 and I think I can stay in the group in Formula 1. That's my idea - now I need to prove it.”

Valsecchi picked up the GP2 title with Eric Boullier’s DAMS team, which had carried Grosjean to glory a year earlier. He will turn 26 in January.
