F1 could launch American feeder series

12 November 2012

An American feeder category is being looked at by Formula 1 management in a bid to increase the sport's popularity throughout the country. According to ESPN, the proposed GP2-style series would hold races in the United States, Brazil and Canada.

Back in 2008, the GP2 Asia Series was created to run after the conclusion of the main championship, with races staged in countries such as Bahrain, China and Malaysia. Should the American version be ratified in the future, it is expected to be organised in a similar manner but with the hope of discovering more home-grown talent.

Although NASCAR and IndyCar are extremely popular in America, the nation has not produced a Grand Prix winner since former World Champion Mario Andretti.
