Paul di Resta experienced a somewhat trying start to the Austin weekend, finishing 18th and quicker only than Formula 1’s three newest teams. The Scot, who would be eliminated in Q1 if he qualified in the same place, is now pushing to solve issues with his car setup.
“I said (on Thursday) that getting the tyres working was going to be difficult – and so it proved,” the Scot began. “The track surface is very smooth and the temperatures were not especially high, which probably didn’t help us.
“We’ve identified some issues and haven’t found the best direction with the setup yet, so we need to work hard to make the car easier to drive. In terms of the layout of the track, it’s very open and there are some nice corners - especially the first sector which has a great flow. A lot of the corners are off-camber, which also adds another challenge.”
Team-mate Nico Hülkenberg, seven tenths quicker than di Resta on a day of very varied lap times, could manage only one place better and ended his Friday in 17th spot.
