Hamilton delighted to beat Vettel to victory
18 November 2012 – Lewis Hamilton clinched his 21st victory with an impressive drive to beat Sebastian Vettel in the United States Grand Prix. Starting from the dirty side of the grid, the McLaren was passed by Mark Webber, but soon re-took second position before charging up to Vettel. The overtake for the lead came following the sole pit-stops.
“To be able to beat Red Bull and Sebastian is definitely a tough challenge but we’ve managed to do it,” Hamilton said, having almost touched Vettel’s car in the DRS zone. “It’s been a great weekend for us. It was very difficult to get past him because my tyres went off and we had to pit two laps before Seb, so he came out quite far ahead of me.”
As Vettel claimed to have been delayed by the lapped HRT of Narain Karthikeyan, Hamilton seized the moment to grab the top spot.
“Traffic usually catches me out, so I was glad it worked in my favour today,” continued the 2008 Champion, who is now ahead of Webber for fourth in the championship. “It’s a great feeling to win this first race back in the States and to compete with these guys.”
The win is Hamilton’s first since Monza, having broken down while in the lead in both Singapore and Abu Dhabi. The feat marks his second consecutive victory in the USA, as the Englishman also won the last US Grand Prix - staged at Indianapolis in 2007.
