Fernando Alonso stresses that he can only affect what happens to him and Ferrari in this weekend’s Brazilian Grand Prix, with fate then deciding whether he or Red Bull’s Sebastian Vettel wins a third world title. Regardless of Alonso’s result, he will miss out at Interlagos if his opponent finishes in any of the top four positions.
“We know it will be difficult for us, but we are confident,” Alonso said in New York City, where he stopped en route to Brazil from Texas and took up the honour of ringing the famous bell to end Tuesday’s day of trading on Wall Street.
“We must do our utmost, concentrating on ourselves and making no mistakes, and then we can see what Vettel has done. It’s been a championship of highs and lows for everyone, but now we can only be perfect.
"However, I think we can sleep more easily than our rivals: we have a lot to gain and little to lose and for them it’s the opposite. In 2010 the situation was reversed, so I hope that once again the outcome goes in favour of the one who is behind at the moment.”
Both of Alonso’s previous two title wins, for Renault in 2005 and 2006, came at the Interlagos circuit which in the past has also opened the Formula 1 season.
