Nico Rosberg has admitted that Mercedes is focussed almost completely on 2013 development, effectively sacrificing its Brazilian Grand Prix weekend in the process. As Pirelli rolled out experimental tyres for next year in Friday’s opening practice, the German spent almost the entire 90 minutes on the orange-marked compound.
“It was a decent Friday for us today,” Rosberg summed up. “There were difficult conditions out there because of the high track temperatures and the altitude, which made it hard to find grip; but we managed quite well and, especially on the long runs, the pace was good.
“So I hope we can do better here than in the previous races, but it will be tough for us and our focus is still on learning and understanding for 2013.”
Since Rosberg finished fifth in Singapore, the Brackley team has ensured a miserable run of five Grands Prix with not a single top ten points finish. As Lewis Hamilton is joining next season, Michael Schumacher will bow out of Formula 1 on Sunday.
