Felipe Massa was beaming after qualifying in Brazil, having ended the day best of the rest behind the dominant McLaren and Red Bull pairings. The leading Ferrari driver, having out-qualified Fernando Alonso for the second time in one week, starts two places ahead of the Spaniard and just one behind championship leader Sebastian Vettel.
“I’m very happy, that was a fantastic lap,” Massa, who won at home in both 2006 and 2008, told BBC Sport. “A really great performance – it was impossible to do better because McLaren and Red Bull are just faster. Now I need to concentrate on race.
“I’ll try everything I can tomorrow. I don’t know about the weather…everybody’s saying it will be wet and we know how Interlagos is. The only thing I need to do is concentrate on my own race and try to get a fantastic result in front of my people. I’ve won a few times here and this feels like pole, so I hope I can do a similar job tomorrow!”
Massa could have easily won three consecutive Brazilian Grands Prix, as he gave up his 2007 success to allow then team-mate Kimi Räikkönen to win the world title.
