'We must be quick straight away' - Ferrari
26 November 2012 – Luca di Montezemolo says Ferrari must design a car that is 'competitive at the highest level' right from the beginning of the 2013 Formula 1 campaign, with Fernando Alonso narrowly missing out on the Drivers' title in Brazil on Sunday afternoon.
Starting the season approximately 1.5 seconds off the pace in Australia, Ferrari had to play catchup throughout the year. Despite a large upgrade for the Spanish Grand Prix, the team ultimately failed to overcome Adrian Newey and Red Bull's RB8 design.
"I am proud of my team," di Montezemolo began. "We fought all the way to the bitter end, getting both our drivers onto the podium for the final race of the season. When you miss out on the title by the smallest of margins, naturally there is some regret.
"Now we must immediately concentrate on next season, because, right from the start, we must have a car that is competitive at the highest level."
Despite narrowly missing out on the Drivers' title, Ferrari managed to secure second place in the Constructors' battle at Interlagos, finishing 22 points ahead of McLaren.
