Fernando Alonso has urged Ferrari to design a much improved car for the 2013 season, having been beaten to this year's title by Sebastian Vettel. The Spaniard, who started the year in a car 1.5 seconds off the pace, believes his team was slower than Williams and Force India in the final few events and says the situation must change.
"For the future, I think we need to improve the car," Alonso explained. "We were behind the Red Bulls, behind the McLarens, and now, in the last couple of Grands Prix, behind Williams and Force India.
"We were clearly slower than them so this is something we must improve next year as we cannot fight for a World Championship if we are too slow."
Alonso, who in his own words delivered the season of his career in 2012, says Ferrari cannot rely on bizarre events to remain in the title hunt in future campaigns.
"We can be a little bit slower but not that much," he added, highlighting the F2012's fundamental lack of performance. "This year it was something strange, combinations that allowed us to fight until the end but I'm not sure we'll be this lucky in the future."
