Vitaly Petrov has two options to consider for the 2013 Formula 1 campaign, GPUpdate.net can reveal. The Russian’s manager, Oksana Kossatchenko, says his results have been strong enough to warrant another season with Caterham, but final details regarding sponsorship need to be finalised before signing a contract.
Petrov, who joined Caterham after a two-year spell at the team formerly known as Renault, secured a lucrative tenth position in the Constructors’ standings by finishing 11th in Brazil, outdoing Timo Glock's 12th place result achieved in Singapore.
"At the moment, yes," Kossatchenko explained to GPUpdate.net when asked if discussions are taking place for more than one seat. "We are not in a position to announce something at the moment as we are still discussing all of the possibilities."
Kossatchenko added that Petrov’s result last Sunday, which is worth millions of pounds in prize money, has provided a timely boost to negotiations with the team.
"I do believe that Sunday’s Brazilian Grand Prix gave us a little bit more of a chance to stay where we are, especially as Vitaly was the guy who got the tenth position which is so important for the team," she said. "We believe it could be a good point in our situation.
"It does not depend on Vitaly, his results or any issues with the team, we are just discussing the business and marketing opportunities we can offer. It is a question of small details that we still have to fix, whether it is with one team or another. We need a little more time. Within the next few days, not weeks, we will sort the project."
The outcome of last weekend's race at Interlagos also ensured that Petrov finished the season as the highest placed driver from the three newest teams to join the sport.
