De Villota undergoes further surgery

29 November 2012

María de Villota underwent further surgery aimed at the reconstruction of her cranium and right eye socket last Wednesday, with the Spaniard still receiving treatment for the injuries she sustained during a freak crash while testing for Marussia in July.

After a successful seven-hour operation Hospital Universitario de La Paz in Madrid, de Villota spent a phase in intensive care before being moved to a standard unit.

"Maria has to restart her recovery again but she still has the strength which we are accustomed to," said her father Emilio de Villota. "We have been able to talk to her in recent days and she was able to follow the last race of the season."

Chief of Plastic and Reconstruction Surgery, Doctor César Casado, said he was 'satisfied' with the outcome of the operation and the patient's overall health.
