'2012 campaign was a miracle' - Alonso

4 December 2012

Fernando Alonso says it was a miracle that he and Ferrari were able to achieve such strong results in 2012, with the team beginning the season some 1.5 seconds off the pace. The Spaniard, who lost out on the title to Red Bull's Sebastian Vettel by just three points, described the year gone by as 'the best season' of his career to date.

"I am happy with the way things went," he said, having claimed three victories in 2012. "In the end, we lost the title by three points, however I did the best season of my life and now I can only think of the year to come. It was a miracle to see, race after race, what we managed to achieve: we definitely did not lose the title in Brazil; that happened in Spa and Suzuka."

Alonso is eager to avoid a repeat of any first lap incidents next year, pinning his hopes on a much improved car design and a little more good fortune.

"Next year, we will try and improve the car, trying to start further up the grid, thus avoiding accidents," he added. "Let’s hope we also have a bit more luck…"

Alonso will enter a fourth season as a Ferrari driver in 2013, having picked up almost one third of his 30 Grand Prix victories during his time at the Maranello-based outfit.
